Another simulator developed within our laboratory consists of a replica of a section of intestine.
The simulator is used by surgeons to practice reconstruction techniques that are performed on small patients with short bowel syndrome. This syndrome leads to malabsorption and malnutrition and may be the result of bowel resection surgery or may be a malformation. The surgical techniques that are performed involve lengthening the intestine, which allows a lengthening of the intestinal transit time by increasing the contact time of nutrients with the walls of the intestine and thus absorption. The simulator mimics a segment of intestine, the mesentery, and the blood vessels of the mesenteral intestine and was made using reverse engineering techniques and a 3D printer.
